Latin name:
Phocinae - Phocini - Phoca - P. hispida
Description:
Ribbon seals have narrow, feline-looking heads. Ribbon seals reach 1.8 m in length and weigh between 90 and 148 kg. Their muzzle is short, their large eyes are close-set, and their nostrils resemble those of the common seal. This species is easy to recognise because of the wide, white bands, which are found around the neck, the front flippers and the pelvis. The remaining fur is dark brown or black.
Pups:
Pups are born, like many arctic seals, with a woolly, white fur. They are born in the spring on floating ice shelves.
Status:
Only a limited number of ribbon seals were hunted for commercial gain.
