Crabeater Seal

Crabeater Seal
Latin name:

Monachinae-Lobodon-L.carcinophagus

Description:
The crabeater seal is the most numerous of all seals. It might even be the most numerous species of mammal on Earth. It is a large, slender seal with a long, narrow muzzle. It reaches around 2.6 m in length and weighs between 200 and 300 kg. It has short whiskers. The fur of a recently moulted crabeater seal exhibits a rich shimmering of light and dark grey hues, suffused with yellowish brown colours. The body is marked with irregular spots and rings, often concentrated around the onset of the flippers. In the course of the year, the variegation of colours diminishes remarkably.

Pups:
Pups are born in the autumn with a woolly, brown fur and dark flippers. They often bear scars from leopard seal attacks.

Status:
Human beings have never hunted the crabeater seal.
