Caspian Seal

Caspian Seal (male and female)
Latin name:

Phocinae, Phocini - Phoca - P.caspica

Description:
Originally, because they are very alike, Caspian seals and Baikal seals were considered a subspecies of the ringed seal. They are approximately 1.4 to 1.5 m in length and weigh around 86 kg. The Caspian seal is a yellowish-grey colour and has a pale belly. The female is lighter in colour and both sexes have brown or bluish spots.

Pups:
Pups are born in the second half of the winter on floating ice shelves. Pups are recognisable by their white, woolly fur.

Status:
Little is known about the behaviour of the Caspian seal. They have been hunted since prehistoric times and they were killed on a grand scale during last century especially. Even though they are still being hunted, this is now done under the supervision of local authorities.
