Caribbean Monk Seal

Caribbean Monk Seal
Latin name:

Monachinae-Monachus-M.tropicalis

Description:
The Caribbean monk seal or West Indian monk seal is most probably extinct. They resembled the Mediterranean and the Hawaiian monk seal (around 2.4 m in length and up to 170 to 270 kg in weight). It is unknown whether there were any distinctive differences between male and female animals. Like the Hawaiian monk seals, Caribbean monk seals were sometimes seen with a green spotted back, which was probably due to a growth of algae.

Pups:
Pups were born in December and had a woolly fur.

Status:
The Caribbean Monk Seal was last seen in the early 50’s.
