Latin name:

Phocinae-Phocini-Phoca-P. Fasciata

Description:
The head of the ribbon seal is narrow and somewhat catlike (1.8 m, 90 to 148 kg). The snout is short and the large eyes are fairly close together. The nostrils resemble those of the Harbour seal. It is easy to recognize from the broad white rings, particularly around the neck, front flippers and the pelvis. The underlying coat is dark brown to black.

Like many other Arctic seals, the pups are born with a white woolly coat. They are born in the spring on floating ice floes.
