Baikal or Nerpa Seal

Baikal or Nerpa Seal
Latin name:

hocinae-Phocini-Phoca- P.sibirica

Description:
Baikal or Nerpa seals are related to ringed seals and are endemic to the isolated Lake Baikal. They are around 1.4 m in length and weigh between 80 and 90 kg. However, they have broader front flippers than ringed seals and their skins are dark and even without spots or rings.

Pups:
Mating takes place, just as with ringed seals, in ice grottos. Pups are born with a white, woolly fur between mid February and the end of March.

Status:
The Baikal seal has been hunted, like the Caspian seal, since prehistoric times. At present the Baikal seal is still being hunted for its flesh and its fur.
