Description:
Bearded seals are large and sturdy (2.5 m, 262 to 361 kg). They have narrow, round heads and a wide, thick snout with wide nostrils. Its most distinctive feature is the thick, curly, yellow bristle on its muzzle. It uses these to find animals on the seabed. In contrast to other arctic seals, female bearded seals have four nipples instead of two. Their main colour varies from light or dark grey to a bluish colour. Its back is always darker than its belly.
Pups:
Pups have a long, dark, woolly fur. They are born in the spring on the arctic ice and on ice shelves.
Status:
The local population hunts the bearded seal to supply in their basic needs. Recently, the Russian seal hunters have started hunting them for commercial reasons too.
