Pieterburen is situated on the ‘Hogeland’ (high land) of Groningen. It is an area with picturesque churches, old country homes, beautiful nature and splendid views over the land, all the way to the Wadden Sea. Apart from the village of Pieterburen, the surrounding area has much places of interest to offer as well. You can go for walks, bike rides and you can even go canoeing.
Some tips:
Neighbouring village Winsum is known as a ‘canoeing village par excellence’. Starting here, you can make scenic canoe trips trough reeds and over quiet canals, which twist through the pastureland.
Noordpolderzijl, north of Usquert, is Holland’s smallest sea-harbour. From here you have excellent views over the Wadden Sea’s mudflats.
The old fishing village Zoutkamp has changed in recent years into an attractive village with flourishing recreational activities. It is situated immediately beside the beautiful National Park Lauwersmeer. The cosy inland port has many lively bars and restaurants and in the historical Rijksbetonningsloods-building there is a fishery museum. Here, you can learn about the Zoutkamp fishing tradition and how it developed. The Menkemaborgin Uithuizen is an old country house, decorated in traditional style. It is fully furnished and has gardens, a moat and canals, and gives an excellent idea of what life was like in 18th century country homes in Groningen.
The old centre of the characteristic village Eenrum, has a church which dates from the 13th century. The tower (from the renaissance period) houses an authentic Lohman organ. Next to the old mill you can find Abraham’s mustard and vinegar factory and museum, which is also a restaurant.
In the village of Warffum you can find the open-air museum Het Hoogeland. The museum shows you how people in the region used to live and work in the 1900’s. The houses that make up the open-air museum are integrated into the rest of the village. Some houses are still being lived in. The museum offers activities, such as a treasure hunt for children.
So, like Pieterburen, the Groningen region is definitely worth a visit. There are also numerous restaurants and many places to stay overnight.
