PRESS RELEASE
Seal from Dordrecht to be released on Saturday
Already 300 seals saved this year thanks to the SRRC

The seal that was caught in the Maas near Dordrecht by Department of Waterways’ employees at the beginning of August will be released on Saturday in Zeeland near Renesse. The young animal, which was named after its savior, Jan Koenen, has meanwhile recovered nicely. Jan Koenen will be the 300th seal to be released by the SRRC this year. At the moment there are one hundred seals at the SRRC. They are mainly lungworm sufferers: parasites that the seals ingest along with their food and which destroy their lungs. Lungworm infection is a childhood disease that young seals normally outgrow in their first year. Pollution has caused the immune system to deteriorate, causing problems for the seals. The SRRC’s biologists are busy doing scientific research into the causes of the extreme rise in Lungworm patients in the last two years.
