Edwin Evers gets up on the mudflats with Daan
Thursday September 23rd, the day had finally come: Seal Daan was being taken back to the Wadden Sea. Edwin Evers and his sidekicks Rick and Niels from Radio 538 personally came along to release “their” seal. When their programme “Edwin Evers staat op” (Edwin Evers gets up) was celebrating its 10-year anniversary a couple of months ago, the SRRC rewarded them a seal for adoption, because the programme often features seals and the SRRC. It was agreed that all three men would come along to release the seal.

In the last couple of months, Edwin, Rick and Niels have often spoken of “their” seal on their programme. It all started with choosing a name. Because it had just become known that “Daan” was number one on the list of most popular names for boys of the moment, the seal was named Daan. They regularly called Lenie to find out how the seal was doing.

Daan was the first baby seal that was found this year. This happened on Ameland on June 3rd. The animal weighed 9,2 kilos and still had its umbilical cord, which showed that he was only four days old. After a couple of months, Daan had grown to almost 42 kilos, he was feeding himself and so it was time to let him go. It was agreed that Edwin’s whole team would come along to free the seal.

On September 23rd, the Harder (a boat belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) sailed from the Eemshaven with three seals on board: Daan, Wesley Sneijder and Sanne, who had all been brought in as babies. The company sailed to the ‘Ra’, a channel under Rottum. The weather was magnificent, the seals were put on a sandbank in their travel baskets and Edwin waved his own seal goodbye. A really beautiful day!
