First baby seal in Termunten

Dear People,
Every day, from May until July, I walk along the dyke of the Eems and the Dollard. That is a distance of about 5 kilometers and every year a young seal is found there. Often, the fyke-net fishermen find them, but this morning I saw the baby seal lying in the mud.

The feeling it gives me is wonderful: I drop everything and dive into the mud to save the young seal. The seal was not moving and when I approached it on my hands and knees, crawling through the Wad, I thought it was dead. However, when I got closer, I saw it was still breathing. He was very weak and exhausted and let himself be picked up by me. It was a premature pup, with his embryonic hair and umbilical cord still partly intact: Two days old.

I immediately called the SRRC. Mostafa and helpers quickly came my way, because the little one was in immediate need of attention. He has infected eyes and water in the lungs. He weighs 8,7 kilos, has already been adopted and has been named Spetter.

I have just been reading an e-mail from Marthijn, our technical support. He says the seal is very weak, “but” he also writes, “We will make him strong again.” It is great having employees like that!

Kind regards,

Lenie
