A rush on the SRRC
Autumnal weather causes a tsunami of sick and malnourished seals
Pieterburen, October 12 2009: The SRRC in Pieterburen has its hands full with rescuing sick seals that are now washing ashore along the Dutch coast. In two days time, 14 sick animals have been brought in. That brings the total number of patients at the SRRC over the last weeks to more than one hundred. It is to be expected that the numbers will rise even more. Never before has the SRRC experienced so many sick and emaciated seals at this time of year. And the great rush is still to come, because the grey seal’s birth season will soon begin. Scientific research is being done to ascertain the reason for the great many victims. The SRRC is in desperate need of good facilities for the very sick patients, such as bathtubs, medical atomisers, large towels and handymen.
Lenie ’t Hart is calling everyone up to help: “We must really do everything we can to care for all the animals. If you consider previous years, we can still expect about one hundred more animals in the coming months. That would bring up the number of animals staying at the SRRC to 200. We need more quarantine rooms, because the ones we have are presently being occupied by 2 to 3 animals each. Who can help me find large bathtubs or pools to equip more quarantine rooms? Who can help as volunteer with handy work or nursing? And who has ideas to raise more money for our seals in order to pay for all the fish and medicines necessary? Come and visit the SRRC and help us!”
To be able to give the best care possible, we are in great need of large towels and flannel sheets. If you have any at home that you no longer use, you could really help the seals with them. Animal lovers can bring them to the SRRC or send them in the post.
Also, during the autumn break, the SRRC is organising special activities at the SRRC visitors centre (making stuff from autumn finds, a treasure hunt) for people of all ages.
