Franciscus’ animal day

FranciscusReport by Lenie ’t Hart:
Last night, the phone rang at half past one. My first thought was: “Oh no, not another prank call.” (Men (hardly ever women) have been known to call me in the middle of the night after a drinking spell singing a song by a Dutch comedian about a horse in the hallway, only in my case they  are singing about a seal in mine.)
This time, however, it was our seal first-aider Kees Kooiman from Noordwijk with a great story. He had been chauffeuring a bridal couple over the beach when he found a seal. A lung worm patient in bad condition: swollen head and much too thin. I could just picture it: The white bridal gown flapping in the wind and then the seal... André set off to Lelystad to take the seals off Kees’s hands while I went to Scheemda to meet André to take the animal to Pieterburen. The whole journey ran like clockwork. We have named the seal Franciscus, in honour of Animal day. Who will adopt him? His rehabilitation will cost at least 500 euros.
