Releasing seals is always reason for celebration. Even more so, if it coincides with your birthday, and if they are seals you found yourself. To make the occasion even more special, we used the “Gebroeders Luden”, an old lifeboat from which I released my very first baby seal 37 years ago. The organisation who keeps the old lifeboat in operation is a truly great, and what enthusiastic people who came to the rescue today!
Along with the crew, who had even brought me a bunch of flowers, and a great group of seal-adopters we celebrated my birthday in the Brakzandstergat near Schier.

It was great to see how the seals Pompel, Maaike, Tess, Mickey and Ommetje discovered the waves and relished their freedom. They had all been found as two or three day old baby seals this summer and weighed less than 10 kilos. Now they were 40-kilo bundles of joy.

A wonderful birthday!
