Lenie ’t Hart sends telegram to Governor Schwarzenegger

This afternoon, Lenie ’t Hart sent a telegram to governor Arnold Schwarzenegger about the imminent removal of a group of seals on the beach near San Diego. She wrote: “Please let the seals be allowed to stay on the beach. The common seal is a very vulnerable species.”

In many areas of the world this species is in decline. In England and Scotland the number of common seals is diminishing dramatically. Similar statistics are known of Sable Island, once the biggest common seal paradise. The common seal is a real coastal dweller and therefore much more vulnerable than, for instance, the grey seal. In the Wadden Sea too, common seals come across human influences such as disruption and pollution. By rehabilitating baby seals, but especially by also saving lung-worm patients – an illness suffered by seals mostly in their first year – the SRRC is able to drive back youth mortality here.

“We must fight for every seal”, is Lenie ’t Hart’s opinion. “It is ridiculous that the state has not yet appointed the beach in San Diego as seal territory.”

Naturally, she is very curious to see whether she will hear something from Schwarzenegger.
