Sponsor a seal’s meal of herring for a day

Pieterburen, July 7th 2009. This summer, visitors at SRRC Lenie ‘t Hart will be able to help ‘feed’ the seals. With this campaign, SRRC visitors can sponsor a seal’s meal of herring for 5 Euros.  This covers the costs of one seal’s daily feed.

Fish is one of the SRRC’s biggest financial burdens. At the moment there are 75 seals in rehabilitation, which eat about 400 kilos of herring a day. The SRRC does not receive any government funding and for its income it is entirely dependent on gifts and donations. Every day, new seals are brought in needing help. Therefore, the SRRC is asking you to help pay for the animals’ care by sponsoring the seals’ meals. You can also help by donating large (beach) towels: We desperately need them for the many baby seals that are here rehabilitating at the moment.

Sponsor a seal’s meal
During the coming summer months the SRRC’s visitor centre will be paying extra attention to the cost of feeding seals. There will be a special stand where visitors will be able to make a one-off donation for one or more meals of herring for the seals. As a thank you for these seal-meals, benefactors will receive a free cup of coffee with a treat in the theme of this campaign. Visitors can also support us by buying the seal-meal badge. This is on sale at the visitor centre shop for € 1,00.

Herring for seals
Now the herring season has started, around 200 million sustainably caught herrings will be sold: A good moment to focus on the herrings that the seals need to survive. All seals in rehabilitation at the SRRC are fed with herring. This fish, because of its shape and fat percentage, is very suitable nourishment for sick and weak animals. Young seals that are found this summer will be getting their fish in the form of fishmeal, which is fed to them with a hose and funnel. The larger, older animals will be given whole herrings.
