Last night, three seals escaped from one of the SRRC’s outside pools, from which they jumped into the canal which lies just behind the centre. One seal has since been captured. Seal Ulbe was swimming around in the Pieterbuurstermaar (canal) just behind the centre, where he was caught by the SRRC workers’ joint effort (see photos). With might and main the SRRC workers are now looking for the other two animals in North-Groningen’s waters. How the animals were able to escape is not yet clear. This morning it appeared that the gate to the outside pool was open, but how that could have happened is not clear.

Seals have never escaped like this before. Lenie ‘t Hart hopes that the two other seals are quickly found. “We are looking along all water edges and are trying to locate the animals with a boat. But they could be anywhere. There are so many ditches and canals in the area. If anyone does see them, please contact the SRRC: 0595 526 526. We will send over our employees immediately to catch them.”
