The SRRC Lenie ’t Hart is against the EU’s plans to weaken the import ban on sealskins. The SRRC claims that importing and using sealskins is outmoded and in contradiction with our culture.
De European Union is planning to apply the existing import ban only to “inhumanely” slaughtered seals. The Netherlands, however, presently has a total ban on sealskin trade and import. The European proposal would weaken the Dutch ban considerably and would force the Netherlands to allow sealskin import again. The SRRC considers this unacceptable. It would mean a huge leap backwards. The existing import embargo in the EU has been effective for almost 25 years due to great pressure from the public. In the Netherlands there is hardly any interest in sealskins. There is the danger, however, that the Netherlands will become an important transit country for sealskins meant for other countries.
