Onyx released in Zeeland’s waters

On Monday, May 26th, the black seal Onyx was released amid great public interest in Zeeland’s waters near Renesse. He had been found more than two months ago near the Brouwersdam in Zeeland and was severely emaciated. He only weighed 20 kilos then. At the SRRC, he regained his strength and weight of 65 kilos. Time had come to return to the sea.

Onyx was waved goodbye by Lenie ‘t Hart, the seal first-aiders from Zeeland, the eleven-year-old Maxine Buurman, who named him Onyx, and nine-year-old Rick Speelman, who had found Onyx. Along with another seal, Onyx happily dived into the water. He stayed around for a little while before making his way to the group of grey seals that live just off the coast.
