Black seal renamed Onyx

The young black seal, Black Jack, that was found in Zeeland in March has been renamed Onyx. Lenie ‘t Hart asked for someone to come up with a nice name. Many good suggestions were put forward. The eleven-year-old Maxine Buurman from Dronten was the lucky winner. Her entry, Onyx, was chosen. That had to be celebrated.

On Saturday, May 10th, the day had finally come: Maxine came to the SRRC for the joyful event, bringing her brother, parents and grandparents. With Lenie ‘t Hart she revealed the new name. Of course, there was some (non-alcoholic) bubbly to celebrate. Onyx was happily swimming out in the sun very unaware of being the centre of attention.

As a present, Maxine received a beautiful Onyx pendant. However, the biggest surprise was that she and her family are to be present when Onyx is released. This unique experience is usually reserved for people who adopt a seal. And Maxine’s reaction? It truly made her day; she was beaming. To complete the treat she was allowed to feed Onyx a fish. Afterwards, there was cake and Maxine received a lovely Onyx cake to take home with her.

Onyx arrived at the SRRC severely emaciated, but now he already weighs 60 kilos! In a little while, he will be able to return to Zeeland. We expect he will be swimming in Zeeland’s waters by the end of May. Until then he can be admired at the SRRC in Pieterburen. Everyone is welcome daily between 9.00 AM and 06.00 PM.
