No April fools joke but a joyful release for Cees the seal

Cees en Cees en LenieOn April 1, 2008, mayor Cees Waal of Delfzijl released ‘his’ seal Cees. Along with another seal, the young animal slid elatedly through the mud of the Dollard into the salty water. Cees had arrived at the SRRC on January 5th as a weakened baby seal from Vlieland and was immediately adopted by the council of Delfzijl, who named him after their Major. After a couple of months stay at the SRRC, Cees had completely recuperated and was fit enough to be released. It was not a complete coincidence that the joyful event took place in the rural district of Delfzijl, at the Punt van Reide in the Dollard. Here, large groups of seals regularly stop to enjoy the peace and quiet and the wide open space. In a sober ceremony, typical for Groningen, Cees and his partner-seal were released into the water, after which Lenie ‘t Hart and major Cees Waal raised their (alcohol free) glasses to the future of this adopted seal and perhaps also a little bit to the future SRRC in Delfzijl.
