04-10-2007 Atlantic White-sided Dolphin found dead on Schiermonnikoog
On Tuesdaymorning, Aril 10th, the SRRC was contacted by Theun Talsma, one of the seal-first-aid volunteers in Schiermonnikoog. A dead white-sided dolphin had washed ashore at post 7. Biologist Nynke Osinga immediately went to the scene to recover the body. Thanks to shipping and salvaging company Wagenborg the dolphin, weighing 140 kg and almost 3 metres in length, could immediately be transported to the SRRC in Pieterburen. Within a couple of days an autopsy will be carried out on the animal. In deliberation with Naturalis (the natural history museum) it will be decided where the skeleton will be kept. White-sided dolphins are a rare sight along the Dutch coast. It is the seventh time that such an animal has run ashore since 1970. This time it was an adult male. We hope that the autopsy will reveal more details about the cause of death.

Storm and very high water during New Year’s Eve have caused even more problems for the colony of grey seals on the sandbanks between Vlieland and Terschelling. The beaches were littered with white pups that had been washed off the sandbanks and had lost their mother. Thanks to the fantastic cooperation of shipping companies Rederij Doeksen and Wagenborg, all the seals were quickly transported to the mainland by ferries. On Monday morning two seals were brought from Vlieland and nine from Terschelling. On the afternoon ferry another twelve arrived from Terschelling and one came from Ameland. By the end of the first day of the New Year the numbers were up to 43.
