First grey seal babies arrived at the SRRC

Grey sealThe grey seal birth season has started again. On November 19, the first two white seal babies were seen by the ferry crew on the Richel (a permanently dry sandbank between Vlieland and Terschelling). On November 23, there were four and on November 30, there were seven young animals on the sandbank with their mothers.

Luckily, only one white baby was brought in from Vlieland after last weekend’s storm. A young seal from the Scottish coast was found in Vlieland, however. They are born earlier there and this seal had already lost its white baby fur. We hope there won’t be many storms in December and January; then the mother seals will be able to nurse their young on the sandbanks without any problems. Last year dozens of half-drowned baby seals were brought in after the first heavy storm.
