Last Thursday, four young seals were released in the Oosterschelde. They had all been found as babies after they had lost their mothers. One of the animals, Lara, was only a day old when she arrived at the SRRC. She was also born prematurely. Lara was released together with Bob, Deborah and Esmee. The seals were released by their ‘adoptive parents’ and their finders.
Because of the holidays, many people were about. Therefore, many people were able to see a seal close up and get acquainted with our work.

It was a matter of concern, however, to see that seals found in the areas of Zeeland and South Holland were in worse condition this year than those found in the Waddensea. Luckily, the animals have now built up enough resistance to be able to take care of themselves again. With researchers we are going to study the reasons why seals in the South of Holland seem to be worse off. Soon another seven seals will be released. Almost all seals born in the Oosterschelde area this year have ended up at the SRRC.
