Despite all the distress and baby seals being washed away in the past weeks, there is also some good news: some of the stranded baby seals were found by their mothers on the beaches of the Wadden islands and are being nursed there. The most important thing now is that they are not disturbed whilst doing this. If the mother panics and flees it is all over. Islanders are monitoring the animals from a distance and are making sure that people and dogs don’t come too close to the mothers and their babies. Luckily, the nursing period is only three weeks long. After that, the young will be able to look after themselves.
