During the last couple of weeks, plans for building the first rehabilitation and information centre on the Caspian Sea coast have become more concrete. Lenie ‘t Hart has held talks in Teheran with university representatives who are interested to be involved in the project.
Also, a Caspian Seal Expert Research Team has already been formed (see photo). The team consists of enthusiastic young scientists who are interested in protecting the (endangered) Caspian seal and its ecosystem. Furthermore, an Iranian investment company has offered the centre use of a top-location along the Caspian Sea. The buildings and infrastructure are already present, and those involved in the realisation of the centre are happy to have SRRC Lenie ‘t Hart’s expertise and experience at their disposal. The new Dutch ambassador in Teheran is enthusiastic about the project and has promised his cooperation. Dutch and Iranian businesses have reacted positively to help get the project off the ground. Plans are now being developed and further steps are being expected in March 2007. The project is not just about seals, but is also concerned with researching and providing information about the entire flora and fauna in the Caspian Sea.
