On Friday 20th and Saturday 21st of October, a total of 6 seals were released back into the Wadden Sea. On Friday, four common seals, which had been brought in to the SRRC in the summer as babies, were released. Healthy, strong and considerably heavier (from 40 to over 50 kilo’s) they traveled on the Krukel, a surveillance ship owned by the ministry of agriculture, nature and food quality to the "Brakzandstergat" (a sandbank south of Schiermonnikoog). The seals were Majoske, Duikertje, Vegor and Mikal, all animals who had been adopted. Their ‘adoptive parents’ came to see their release. It was a beautiful afternoon, and the sun had just come out as the party arrived at the sandbank.

On Saturday October 21st, two gray seals were released on the Noordvaarder, Terschelling’s large beach. Here it concerned Pieter Jelle and Gambit, who both had been brought to the SRRC in August with severe fishnet wounds. In the meantime, the cuts (up to 5 cm deep) had healed and both animals were in good health, ready to be released into the wild. We hope they will never come into contact with fishnets again!
